NAME: Faust
CANON: Arknights
CANON POINT: After Episode 6-7
AGE: Unknown, estimated ~16-17
BACKGROUND: His history is HERE on the Arknights wiki. I’ll be taking him from after Episode 6-7.
Added note: Faust’s race has not been confirmed canonically but a lot of fandom speculates that he is either a Pythia or Savra.
PERSONALITY: A stark contrast to his companion Mephisto, Faust seems to be almost the ideal example of a sniper: stoic, focused, and level-headed. A young man of few words he generally lets other people (or his crossbow) do the talking, keeping his thoughts to himself and being very difficult to read aside from by those who know him best. But beneath his collected exterior and unreadable expression lies a young man who harbors extreme self-doubt, exhaustion, and dark views of the harsh world he grew up in. But despite his ruthless trigger finger and the whole being a terrorist business he is not completely heartless. In truth he is just rightfully wary of others and slow to trust, and despite his stoicism he will go to extreme lengths for the people he does care about. He even has a gentler side- especially for those who have suffered unjustly- and has earned the respect of many members of Reunion at all levels because of his good leadership and noble actions. Members of his squad even reveal that Faust encouraged them to honor the dead by firing off explosive bolts in mourning, telling them it was never a waste of ammunition to show their fallen comrades respect.
While he might come off as aloof or even haughty he actually keeps to himself because of the effect his words have had on Mephisto since they were children, as the other tends to interpret them in twisted ways. On numerous occasions his suggestions have lead to the deaths of others, something that Faust has always internalized and blamed himself heavily for. Despite being complicit in plenty of bloodshed- both directly and indirectly- the young man’s only wish has always been to survive alongside his friend and make some sort of safe existence together with him. Unlike Mephisto he takes no joy from death or combat and Greythroat notes that he never shoots at civilians or anyone not directly attacking him even when they are part of the enemy force. Also unlike his friend it’s clear that he does genuinely care for the other members of Reunion, especially those in the Phantom Crossbowmen. At several points he goes out of his way to ensure other Reunion members’ safety in the heat of battle and before his final stand he pushes his Arts abilities to their limit to make sure that both his squad and Mephisto can escape.
He believes that trusting in ones’ intuition and not living based on orders or the words of others is important and tries to instill this in Mephisto regularly and even Greythroat during their brief encounter. Unfortunately in the end he feels that he has allowed things to tip past the point of no return once he watches Mephisto unleash his horde upon their own members, becoming despairing over his inability to stop his friend’s rampages yet again. This actually tips him over his own breaking point and convinces him to stay behind and sacrifice himself, too emotionally and mentally exhausted to continue living and refusing to continue hurting others. While he long ago came to accept pain and death as a fact of life he never wanted to be complicit in so much senseless violence, ultimately hoping that without him around Mephisto can find his own way and survive.
Even though there is no arguing that Faust is extremely capable for someone of his young age and has amassed both an infamous reputation and the respect of many to show for it he still feels ultimately powerless when it truly counts. After the first time Mephisto killed someone it instilled a sense of guilt within him that he carries with him for the rest of his life, although it also creates a person with a strong sense of reliability and determination. While he apparently had no skills aside from generic streetsmarts when first joining Reunion and couldn’t even fire a crossbow he trained and studied rigorously to learn and improve. Thanks to his cohort often acting erratically he has basically been forced to learn patience and vigilance and has arguably perfected both more than many of the older characters around him.
But ultimately even though Faust puts on a brave face it’s clear that all the repeated trauma has affected him greatly and- despite being mature well beyond his years- he is still just a young man who tragically never got to have any semblance of a normal life.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Faust is an infamouslyannoying difficult boss in the game because of his ability to be temporarily invulnerable, the fact that he can’t be blocked no matter what, and can (and will) shoot at you from anywhere.
It goes without saying that he is an extremely skilled sharpshooter despite using only what appears to be a slightly modified crossbow. Thanks to his ability to use Originium Arts he has that pesky extended range, allowing him to hit anyone who he can see- up to and including close range. He can also use his Arts to enhance the firing power of his bolts once in a while to such devastating effect that he can one-shot even some of the sturdiest defenders in the game if you aren’t prepared.
Besides his immense firing power Faust is mostly infamous for his skills in stealth and the aforementioned invulnerability. He’s able to use his Arts to alter the refraction of light to “cloak” both himself and other people from view, mostly utilizing it to hide the squad he commands so that they can carry out missions and snipe seemingly from all directions without being spotted. However this ability is not infallible and if he uses it on other people they cannot move too much for the duration otherwise it will ruin the illusion and expose them again. If he uses it on himself he can maintain the invisibility while moving and even can enhance his speed, making it easy for him to track his marks and slip behind enemy lines.
He can overcome the hurdle of hiding others and conceal a large group while they move but doing so is extremely taxing on his body and will cause serious organ damage.
INVENTORY: His crossbow, one set of extra bolts, his Reunion communicator
